Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Listening Project

Updated: May 10, 2021

As a group we were told to listen to two versions of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. And to compare and contrast them.

What do they have in common?

· They both use the same instruments, Drum Kit, Lead

· They are both 80 beats per minute

What do they not have in common?

· The first version is a studio performance. This means that it is cleaner cut therefore less mistakes made.

· The second version is a live performance, therefore not as clean cut

· Everything is more level in the first version

· The drums and vocals have a higher level than the guitar, Not at the same level

· The second version is more distorted than the first version

· They do not start the same

· The second version is monophonic with the drums

· The first version is homophonic with the guitar and the drums

Compare

There are very few comparisons between the two versions of the song. They are both at 80 beats per minute. They both have the same instruments including, a Drum Kit, Lead Guitar, Bass guitar and Lead Vocals. In addition, they both have the same structure.

Contrast

At the start of the track the studio recording was more homophonic (2 lines of music), this is heard as there are more instruments that are working together however, In the second version the drums sounded monophonic (one line of music) as you could only hear the drums clearly. The first version, in the studio, has a cleaner cut meaning it sounds more professional. The second version, the live performance, is more distorted. This is because they were recorded differently. The first version is more level than the second version. In the first version the vocals are at the front of the track however, in the live performance the drums and vocals are at the same level and the guitar is quieter. In the studio recording you could hear every instrument; however, in the live version it was all merged together.

Conclusion

To Conclude, there are fewer similarities than there are differences.

The listening skills would help me develop how to listen out to getting the perfect balance of instruments when i am doing practical work. This would help my future career by progression as i would be able to hear whats going on to get a cleaner cut of having a great standard that i can put myself to.
