As well as many other people I am thinking about going to university. There are the ups and downs of going to university, the positives are that you get to work with people who want to go into the same sector as you, you would also get to know different companies and work with them. The negatives are that you wouldn’t get to get work experience and a portfolio that employers would want to see.
There are many Universities that do live sound and Production. The Reason I would go to University is to get a greater understanding of different situations you could be faced with in the live events industry. In addition, I would want to go to University to be able to have more experience working with people who already work in live sound. Finally, going to university to do live sound is a good idea as you are able to get a job if the university has a partnership with a specific company.
Open days. Pre-lockdown I went to a few open days. As you would find at any open day, you would get a tour around the campus and the accommodation. I found that one was very interactive and allowed you to ask lots of questions. The second one I found that it was just sitting in a lecture hall being talked at for 45 mins to an hour. They were very different and took a different approach from each other. With all open days you have to go in with an open mind.
Overall, open days are a good place to get to understand the course that you are interested in. In addition, it allows you to gain more of an understanding of where you would want to go after education.
